'No expansion of fake news networks' - Trump intensifies
attack on media, TV channels are working for radical leftism
President Trump took aim at TV networks for alleged
left-leaning bias, calling for their reduction rather than expansion. His
comments coincide with potential changes in the television landscape and his
administration's ongoing efforts to challenge media practices.
US President Donald Trump opposes the expansion of
television networks, particularly targeting ABC and NBC, which he claims are
biased towards the left. He argues that they should be seen as part of a
campaign for the radical left and calls for reducing them.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump said, "I would
not be happy if this would allow the Radical Left networks to 'expand' as well.
ABC and NBC, in particular, are a disaster – a virtual arm of the Democrat
Party," adding, "They should be viewed as an illegal operation for
the Radical Left. No expansion of the fake news networks. If anything, make
them smaller!"
USA: Trump verbally attacks media more than 100 times before
election
Over the eight-week-long period analyzed by RSF, Trump
insulted, attacked, or threatened the media at least 108 times in public
speeches or comments from September 1 to October 24. This figure does not
include social media posts or comments from others associated with the
campaign.
At the beginning of Trump's speech, given at a campaign
rally in Uniondale, New York, on September 18, he told the gathered crowd of
his supporters that he had a message to deliver to the "fake news
media." He then pointed to the back of the room where the press contingent
had gathered and said, "Look how many people are there." Many of the
gathered supporters started shouting loudly at the journalists and making fun
of them. Similar moments of collective anger against the media have become an
almost routine feature at Trump's rallies, to the extent that they appear to be
part of the scripted event.
Despite the worrying regularity of Trump's anti-media
statements, they now rarely make news, let alone headlines. During the period
analyzed, RSF found only one example of local news coverage of a Trump rally in
October that mentioned encouraging the crowd to denigrate the press. In a
sense, Trump's anti-media tendencies are well known, but the regularity and
intensity of these attacks are now flying largely under the radar.
