match of the tri-series
Pakistan 151 for 5 (Fakhar 44, Usman 37*, Evans 2-26) beat
Zimbabwe 147 for 8 (Bennett 49, Nawaz 2-22) by five wickets.
Zimbabwe lost seven wickets for 37 runs and were reduced to
147 for 8, when the total was over 180. Nevertheless, they chased down
Pakistan's target in the final overs, with their fast bowlers striking three
times to slow Pakistan's advance in the powerplay, before putting pressure on
the hosts in the middle overs.
However, Pakistan's Nos. 5, 6 and 7 pulled them out of the
hole. Playing his comeback T20 innings, Fakhar Zaman scored 44 runs in 32 balls
and shared a 61-run partnership with Usman Khan. After this Usman got the
support of Mohammad Nawaz, who was earlier the best bowler of Pakistan. The
required rate at this stage had become a challenge, but Nawaz's 20 off 12 balls
ensured that the win was ultimately comfortable.
If Brian Bennett had given a straightforward chance to Nawaz
at the midwicket boundary when 15 runs were needed from 10, Zimbabwe might have
faced a tough challenge at the business end. In the end, Nawaz hit the winning
four with four balls remaining.
Zimbabwe's veteran Graeme Cremer, playing his first T20I in
seven years and after 122 matches – the latter, a record – conceded 27 runs
from three overs for one wicket.
Nawaz pushed Zimbabwe back
After seven overs, Zimbabwe were performing brilliantly. The
openers hit 11 fours and one six. The run rate was within touching distance of
10 and 26 runs were scored in the first two overs of spin. But bowling faster
and more accurately than the legspinners, Nawaz achieved the breakthrough which
soon led to a flood of wickets when he had Tadivanashe Marumani caught at deep
square leg, although the first wicket came from a full toss.
However, it was Nawaz's economics that set him apart. He
conceded only 22 runs in his four overs and his economy rate (5.50) was by far
the lowest of any bowler who bowled four overs in the game. With the bat, he
was unlucky to be out for nine, but hit a six and two fours to ensure that
Pakistan did not falter in the end.
fall of zimbabwe
The period in which Zimbabwe collapsed worst was in the
middle of their innings, when they slipped from 91 for 1 in the 11th over to
128 for 8 in the 19th over. Pakistan's spinners dominated during this period,
with Saim Ayub and Abrar Ahmed also taking important wickets. Although there
was not much turn on the surface, the legspinners often beat the batsmen in
flight, and applied pressure through dot balls. Due to this pressure, two
Zimbabwe players were also run out.
In the eight overs between the 11th and 19th overs, Pakistan
conceded only 30 runs. It took an unbeaten 34-run inning from Sikandar Raza (34
runs in 24 balls) to avert complete disaster.
Zimbabwe's fast bowlers dominate in the powerplay
Zimbabwe's fast bowlers dominate in the powerplay
Early wickets are important when defending a modest score,
and that's what Zimbabwe got when Brad Evans dismissed both Sahibzada Farhan
and Babar Azam in the fifth over, before Tinotenda Maphosa trapped Salman Agha
in the sixth. At the end of the powerplay, Pakistan's score was 31 runs for 3
wickets.
They would also struggle in the next four overs, and when
Ayub was dismissed by Cremer's legspin in the 10th over, the required rate
reached nine and Zimbabwe looked to defend their total. But a sensible stand
between Zaman and Usman helped Pakistan chase down to some extent and Nawaz
finished the job.

Pakistan is all set to host Zimbabwe in the first match of the T20I Tri-Series
in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The series also includes Sri Lanka as the third
partner. This series will be played under tight security because 12 people lost
their lives in the bomb blast in Islamabad last week. Several members of the
Sri Lankan team, who were there for the three-match ODI series against
Pakistan, had expressed concerns over their safety and sought permission to
return home.
However, SLC directed all players, support staff and team
management to continue the tour as per schedule. Pakistan won the ODI series
3-0 over Sri Lanka with a six-wicket win in the third match on Sunday.
